Gallic timbering and dewatering techniques at the Fagassiere fold mine. A salvaging excavation carried out at the Fagassiere gold mine (southern Haute Vienne) in 1996 disclosed a whole set of opencast and underground mining sites. These gallic works datable to the II.-I. centuries B.C. (Tene III) were equipped with an intricate and well-preseved wooden timbering in a waterlogged environment. The proximity of underground water did not however impede the progress of miners who must have installed dewatering devices (channels - cross- cuttings) to drain the water out of their underground working sites
