The site of Porsuk and Bulgarmaden's mine Summary. The site of Porsuk in Southern Cappadocia was settled by the Hittites as early as the XVIIth century B.C. In addition to the strategic usefulness of the hôyiik in a valley connecting the central Anatolian plateau to the plain of Cilicia, there was also the necessity to control the access to the Bulgarmaden's mine of argentiferous lead in nearby Taurus. The excavations by a French archeological mission at work since 1968 prove that the extraction of the metal from the ore was in Antiquity performed on the very site, chiefly during the Hittite period (end of the second millenium) ans the Early Iron age (beginning of the first millenium
