As autobiography doesn’t count among ancient literary genres, it would seem that only correspondence offers a literary space for intimate self-expression. It is therefore of some interest to study how disease, pain and suffering can take place in the epistolary literature that was transmitted to us. While these examples remain rare, they reveal the existence of generic common places, in which the expression of pain plays an important role. A whole book of the correspondence exchanged between Fronto and Marcus Aurelius can be read as a series of health bulletins
