Sexual morals among the clergy and laymen at Fréjus in the fourteenth century. Based on extant lists of judgements for the diocese of Fréjus in the fourteenth century, this study attempts to analyse to what extent the clergy and laymen respected norms for sexual behaviour decreed by the authorities. As for the clergy, the Gregorian reform prescribed celibacy and chastity, values which not all of them had successfully integrated into their behaviour. As for the lay, it appears that the secular courts, less strict on this matter than the Church, only repressed offences of a sexual nature in so far as they attacked marriage and the family or endangered public and social order. This explains the tolerant attitude shown towards the extra-marital relationships of young men and its corollary, prostitution
