Critical and historical Adam Rejecting the allegorical interpretations of "Genesis" and the "Bible", Pierre Bayle deploys a conception of history that exploits the notions of error and heresy in his "Dictionnaire historique et critique". From the articles «Adam » and « Eve » to the article « Manicheans », he develops a radical critique of Christianity and its history as well as a celebration of the negative effects of reason and the constraints it imposes on the practices of history. The « critical and historical method », basing its power on philology and erudition on the one hand, and on skepticism, on the other, locates historical truth in error and its histories
