Analyse critique du livre de C. Gallini, qui surestime l'importance des ferments révolutionnaires - du point de vue politique, social et religieux - dans le « scandale » des Bacchanales (186 av. J.-C). Le fond de l'affaire est essentiellement politique. C'est ainsi du moins qu'en ont jugé les responsables de l'ordre romain, défiants (à tort ou à raison) envers une association dirigée par des Campaniens et dont les ramifications en Italie du Sud pouvaient soutenir ou entretenir un mouvement de résistance aux dominateurs de la Péninsule. La liturgie des Bacchanales n'avait rien d'insolite par rapport aux rituels hellénistiques. La version officielle des faits n'a tant insisté sur les innovations d'Annia Paculla que pour justifier la répression, tout en affectant de respecter la tradition dionysiaque authentique
