What is a Bible ? Designated in French by a feminine singular noun of Greek origin, the Bible proves problematic if one seeks to define it exactly. Originally a Hebrew « object », with a complex compositional history, it is a collection of books covering some twelve centuries and recounting fears, perceptions and doctrinal positions which are not merely external to the composite whole, more library than book. But having appeared as a single bound volume for twenty centuries, it raises the question of its purpose, its unifying nature and of canonical obligations. Whether dependent on religious sources and means, or independently, its use as a cultural tool is currently renewing the question of what the Bible's nature really is
