Academics frequently require material resources and this leads to the use of ancillary staff. This empirically based study includes an examination of how resources shape academic activity and a consideration of the character of the relationship between academics and ancillary staff. There are sources of difficulty in this relationship. A basically instrumental link may need to be supplemented by ‘integrative ̊s elements. Sometimes problems stem from an unsatisfactory authority structure and the fact that ancillary staff may have countervailing power through their specialised knowledge. As regards general resource allocation, one problem area is funds for travel. Consideration is also given to a rather special situation where two kinds of resource—computational and laboratory facilities—are in competition. This has a number of consequences including a lowering of the morale of technical staff. Greater understanding is needed of resource problems and the relationship between academic and ancillary staff
