This article inquires into risk consciousness as a political and moral imperative that is reconstituting the nature and purposes of university systems, policies and processes. It discusses the assumptions that underpin such systems, and how such systems, once operationalised, change the work that academics actually do. The aim is to draw attention to the extent to which the heightened risk consciousness that has become a hallmark of the contemporary university works both to constrain and to enable what academics pay attention to, and how we understand what it means to be an effective manager, teacher or researcher
