This paper examines the interactions between endowed abilities the societal wage structure and the allocation of human capital resources children within the family. An overlapping generations model is formulated in which adult parents with different endowments (sex) are paired in households with children of both sexes. Wages of individuals in the labor market also differ by sex and by levels of human capital. The author uses the model to show how parental altruism intrafamily substitution of time and support by offspring of elderly parents affect intrafamily investments in male relative female children when there are exogenous changes in parental wage rates and in the societal wage distribution. Implications are derived for differences in time-series and cross-sectional estimates of wage effects on household behavior and for policy interventions that alter the wage distribution and affect the evolution of wage inequality over generations as a consequence of household behavior.
