In the absence of data needed to apply sophisticated decomposition techniques to aggregate-level fertility change a simple decomposition analysis of recent fertility trends in Bangladesh India Nepal Pakistan and Sri Lanka illuminates the positioning of these countries along the demographic transition. The change in the total fertility rate between 1960-1964 and 1980-1984 is decomposed in this exercise into 2 components one due to changes in age-specific proportions married and the other due to changes in age-specific marital birth rates. Each of these 2 major components is further decomposed by age. (authors)
