Despite the importance of demographic trends in the USSR for all aspects of Soviet society not a single volume has been published to date on the results of the 1979 census. This article examines the highlights of the information released in journals and in the general news media ventures inferential judgments to fill in gaps in what has been released and points to selected implications of these data for future Soviet population growth or lack of it. Major changes occurring in the structure of the Soviet population--differential rates of population growth among different national groups; failure of the male population to regain a normal share of the total population in the postwar period; uneven geographic distribution of the young; and an aging of the overall population are discussed.
