The authors of the papers included in this volume examine the historical evidence for and implications of urbanization in the countries of the Western Sahel. In particular the focus is on migration from rural areas to the cities of Senegal and Gambia. Six chapters are included on aspects of migration in Senegal. Separate chapters are also included on migration in and from Mauritania Mali and Gambia. A concluding chapter focuses on the public policy implications of this migration. (ANNOTATION)
