This book which provides a university and graduate school-level introduction to population and development issues is the first of its type to use examples from Asia for its empirical material and places an unusual emphasis on developing countries. Each chapter presents theories about population and development that are backed up with empirical and quantitative findings and case studies. The demographic measures and principles covered are illustrated in boxes. The first part of the book contains two chapters that discuss theories of population and subsistence and the adjustment of households to food supplies and other resources. Part 2 considers population from the perspective of time in two chapters that describe the changing balance of births and deaths and the environmental impact of population. The two chapters in part 3 look at famine and the prevention of mass mortality and the political economy of health. Part 4 includes two chapters that deal with fertility decline in the course of development and offer examples from case studies of fertility transition in Asia. The final part of the book details the demographic impact of industrialization in chapters on 1) urbanization and migration and 2) population employment and education
