This is an attempt to provide a concise overview of the basic data needed to analyze the major U.S. demographic and economic trends of the recent past and short-term future from a planners rather than a demographers perspective. analysis begins at the very general level of broad national population-growth trends and then focuses on two internal facets--age structure and household composition. Subsequently attention is directed to the impact of these factors on the labor force first in terms of individuals and then as family units. The effect of the national economic environment on these elements is then presented and connections to income patterns considered. The intersection of economic and demographic events is further evaluated in terms of consumption expenditures and the housing arena. Finally the spatial redistribution of Americas people and jobs is described both as to the evolving patterns and their linkage to the dynamics underlying the preceding demographic and economic trendlines.
