L'historiographie s'est intéressée jusqu'ici aux hallucinations musicales en lien avec les débuts de la médecine moderne, si bien que le xixe siècle a été considéré comme une période charnière marquant une rupture : les conceptions mystiques auraient été supplantées par une approche scientifique attribuant aux hallucinations le statut de symptômes. Mais la réalité est plus complexe, et cet article montre de quelle façon les différents discours - religieux, semi-scientifiques, romantiques et médicaux - ont permis le maintien de conceptions ambiguës et positives du phénomène
