La profesión médica en España se caracteriza generalmente por una autonomía y un poder relativamente grandes, con control sobre la organización y la industria de la atención médica. El desarrollo del mercado de la sanidad en España se divide en tres periodos desde 1949 a 1987, con un segundo periodo que muestra una rápida expansión del campo bajo el control del estado, y un último periodo en el que se logra una estabilidad debdio a que se habían alcanzado los límites económicos. Se observan las siguientes características estructurales en la profesión: (1) su desarrollo ha sido dependiente del desarrollo del mercado creado en el área de la salud pública; (2) la práctica profesional ha sido dependiente del estado; (3) los médicos geográficamente se concentran en grandes ciudades y áreas más ricas; y (4) la mayoría del trabajo de los médicos se desarrolla en organizaciones con estructuras jerárquicas y burocráticas grandes
