La comparaison du traitement public de l’islam en France et aux États-Unis permet de saisir des imbrications différentes entre approches raciale, sociale et religieuse. Si l’islam est perçu en France comme se heurtant au modèle laïc, il est protégé en tant que religion aux États-Unis. Pour autant, dans les deux sociétés, ses pratiquants cristallisent les préjugés racialisants. Ainsi, l’étude de la stigmatisation des Musulmans, ou de ceux qui sont perçus comme tels, permet de comprendre l’articulation des considérations raciales et religieuses dans la structuration d’un imaginaire de la menace et ses conséquences pour les populations qui en sont victimes
