La présence belge en Afrique subsaharienne -colonisation du Congo et tutelle sur le Rwanda et le Burundi -na pas entraîné de flux migratoires substantiels en provenance de ces pays jusqu'aux années soixante. Pourtant si les Africains du sud du Sahara occupent encore aujourd'hui une place modeste au sein des populations étrangères installées en Belgique, leur statut et leur image restent fortement marqués par les stéréotypes hérités du passé colonial du royaume
