La représentation commune des migrations du dix-neuvième siècle comme le transfert soudain et unique des populations des campagnes vers les villes au moment où l'Europe effectuait sa transition d'une société pré-industrielle à une société industrielle a été sensiblement revue au cours des dernières années. S'appuyant sur les recherches académiques récentes destinées à développer un cadre conceptuel novateur, cet article prend la ville belge d'Anvers comme objet d'une étude de cas et utilise les données nominatives d'environ 20 000 nouveaux habitants arrivés entre 1760 et 1860 pour étudier la dynamique des évolutions migratoires sur une longue période. Au cours de cette période, la ville a connu une profonde mutation ; la ville de taille moyenne, centre régional de l'industrie textile, se transformant en une cité portuaire au rayonnement international de plus de 120 000 habitants, dont l'arrière-pays rural se trouvait confronté à un processus de paupérisation croissant. Ce changement profond fait de cette ville un cas idéal pour étudier en détail les dynamiques de migration et identifier à quel rythme les différents groupes d'immigrants évoluent
