Hagiographers provide us with a rather precise picture of the first steps of the Christian mission in this long isolated part of Gaul : they stress the decisive part played by the kings, the metropolitans of Reims or of some other influent seat in the Second Belgium, like Noyon at the time of Eligius. In their undertaking, the whole better organised Church of the end of the vth century in the Second Belgium, plays a decisive role. At first the country was divided between missionaries, often monks, who sometimes were bestowed the episcopal charge. Conversion itself was made durable through the foundation of episcopal seats, showing their progressive establishement in their monuments : for a period in Tournai, certainly in Cambrai, definitely in Thérouanne. Over two centuries (vith and vnth centuries) the progression was quite slow, though it was given a furthier impetus with Amand's work in Flanders and later on Willibord's in the Frisian country
