The discovery and the exploitation in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries of the coal-mining basins of the north of Europe, followed by the digging of the canals and the building of the railway lines put an end to the old dependence of the Northern countries on Atlantic, French of Iberic, sea salt, and dealt the last blow, in France itself, to the Western salts replaced by salts produced in Lorraine. From then on the new ignigenous saltworks have at their disposal a cheap locally produced source of energy and, thanks to steampower, they can take advantage of powerful tools, while older saltworks like Lunebourg, encumbered with feudal rents, will join the modernisation trend two centuries late
