M. Rouche, Historical topography of Cambrai during the Middle Ages. The origins of Cambrai have never been studied with some accuracy. This study of texts associated with that of the Cadastral survey brings more precision about the setting of the Roman wall, of the cathedral site in the South-East corner and of six other sanctuaries distributed over four suburbs. This Merovingian expansion was stopped during the Carolingian period. The rampart built by Bishop Dodilon after the Norman invasion shows that the extension is unchanged and so it is after the reconstruction following the Hungarian attack in 954. There will not be any other change in the topography of Cambrai before the middle of the Xlth century
