The documents presented here bear on the centuries-old conflict opposing Lille to the big boroughs depending on the castle (Roubaix-Tourcoing) in respect to the urban monopoly of weaving sayette and «bourgeterie». The 1609 edict having given some satisfaction to the low country, this latter then tried to press on its advantage. After Roubaix, it is Tourcoing's turn in 1623 to claim new liberties. Lille and Tournai, for once united, reply vigorously. On both sides, one brings forward history, the law, morals, religion, the testimony of the elders. These valuable documents allow us not only to get a clearer picture of the condition of an industry wrecked by the 1617-1621 depression, but give us also a precious insight into the behaviours, mentalities and passions of the merchants, craftsmen and labourers in town as well as in the country
