M. Rouche, The Saxons and the origins of Quentovic. The search for the origins of the harbour of Quentovic can receive a new impulse if we consider the Saxon settlement in the Vimeu, Ponthieu and Boulonnais of which it was the centre. A special missionary movement evangelized these sea-faring populations from south to north in the course of the Vllth century. Informations provided by geo-history, toponymy, oronymy, numismatology and archaeology prove that these Saxons coming from the mouths of the Elbe, after mixing with other Germanic peoples, settled along the coasts after 435, then again between 500 and 565, the heart of this settlement being the harbour of Quentovic which appeared in the middle of the Vlth century. The development of this harbour was probably similar to that of Hamvic and Dorestadt
