One knows the importance, all along the xvinth century, of the Utopian discourse, an essential paramètre of the « Enlightenment ». One also knows how points of contact were often made out between the invariants of the Utopian discourse and items of the Rous- seauist thematic. But the views expressed by Rousseauist thinking on the domain of Utopia - some of which as early as the publication of the major works - have generally been part of a polemical scheme. The aim of this article is thus to examine how someone like Rousseau has managed to use, appropriate, or divert devices or images of the Utopian discourse and why he integrated certain data to opposite textual patterns, thus leaning more on the power of imagination than promoting imagination as a power
