Nearly all the major retail firms in France are daughters of the «Thirty Boom Years», even though their past and the families of their founders - nearly always from the provinces - are ancient. They first experienced a high rate of growth (1950-1973) then a more irregular one (1973 to these days), they created complex organizations, sometimes on an international scale. The goal of this article is then to try and understand which strategies they have developed in order to change dimensions while keeping for a long time a family-type management and which conditions and regulations have governed, when the case arose, the transition from family management to the "managerial" stage
