In Roman Gaul, the habit of carving out inscriptions is rightly viewed as connected with the Romanisation process, as a custom borrowed from the conquerors. But a global examination of the different types of inscriptions and their distribution leads one to believe that they did not assume a similar function in the social environments of Gaul and Italy. Once again Gallic society proves more traditional and rural with a still relatively underdeveloped urban sector
