A careful inventory and analysis of the XVth century printed material kept in northern France helps design a broad outline of cultural history at the end of the Middle Ages : at first, northern France, closely connected to the original Gutenbergian area - medium Rhine-land - , appears to be among the privileged geographical spaces in which the new book-civilisation developed. The weight of the XIIIth century scholastic traditions remains nonetheless very heavy in our collection, as the contribution of the humanistic movement looks rather minor. Innovation seems rather to lie on two essential fields, the wide diffusion of new types and models of worship from the Rhine valley and present day Holland, and the rise of a category of « enlightened » lay readers, not only among the staff and civil servants of the Duke, but also among the merchant middle-class of the major cities of the region
