Cet article retrace l'histoire de l'expression« démocratie raciale» dans la littérature sociologique au Brésil. Ce terme, associé en général à l'idée de « mythe », est régulièrement utilisé dans les études sur les relations raciales avec beaucoup de flou dans les définitions. Le texte reconstitue d'abord les origines de cette expression en minimisant le rôle joué par Gilberto Freyre. Il examine ensuite les évolutions de son usage en insistant sur les enquêtes de l'Unesco dans les années 1950 et les textes de Florestan Fernandes dans les années 1960
