As explained in the thoughtful introduction by the coeditors Sven Beckert and Christine Desan, the fourteen diverse essays that compose American Capitalism highlight the chronological reach, varied approaches, and myriad topics subsumed within the history of capitalism. Many are written by historians whose contributions do not depart radically from their previous scholarship. Rather, they are repositioned within the perspective of this relatively new subfield. This perspective reaches from the mercantile past to the expansion of slavery and the rise of the corporation through the fiscal crisis of the 1970s and up to current manifestations of globalization. The essays, though, are organized thematically-"making markets," "claiming and contesting capitalism," "'knowing' capital," and "refiguring space from the local to the global"-provoking consideration of how capitalism has been remade, resisted, and remade again. Cumulatively, the essays prompt a welcome confrontation with the status of the history of capitalism. In many ways, it is an overdue effort to reintroduce the centrality of the power of class into historical analysis while incorporating the more recent lessons of social and cultural history. Thus, a number of chapters focus on some combination of the intersections of race, class, and gender as essential to capitalist formation, maintenance, and expansion. What emerges is a book that incorporates and broadens elements of economic history but that also casts a more critical gaze on the relationship of capitalism to power by insisting on the explanatory value of political economy
