Although the end of the Cold War was a momentous and surprising development, scholarly analysis of its occurrence has been remarkably thin. Unlike the origins of the conflict, which inspired a vast literature, discussions of its conclusion has often take this outcome for granted or ascribe it to simple causes, whether President Ronald Reagan's hard-line policies, the internal weakness of the Soviet Union, or an unspecified combination of the two. Against this backdrop, Simon Miles's Engaging the Evil Empire initiates a more pointed and factual exploration of the topic. He focuses on the years most frequently overlooked: the time between Reagan's accession to the presidency and the period between 1981 and 1985 when serious diplomacy between the United States and the Soviet Union began.
