This edited book, a recent addition to the authoritative and impressive series of handbooks published by Oxford University Press, offers readers a panoramic view of the history of immigration to the United States and the forging of ethnicity as immigrants and their children interacted with each other and with Americans, politically and socially. Ronald H. Bayor's volume offers many ways to think about the impact of that immigration on the life of the nation, and the impact of the nation on the millions of women and men who chose to come to America. Twenty-eight essays, plus Bayor's informative introduction, make this a worthwhile contribution to the literature. Bayor, who also produced The Columbia Documentary History of Race and Ethnicity in America in 2004 and who edited the Journal of American Ethnic History can add this handbook to the list of his outstanding contributions to the field of immigration and ethnic history
