Written for a popular audience, this biography of Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921–2009) explores how an intelligent, talented woman ambitious to make a difference in the world forged a life while being female in an influential U.S. political family that anticipated a public life only of its male members. As the author Eileen McNamara writes, “breaking barriers was for Kennedy men, not Kennedy women” (p. xxi). McNamara is a beautiful writer who grounds her analysis of Shriver in Kennedy family loyalties and power dynamics, Shriver's deeply felt Catholic faith, Shriver's “empathy” and “rage” for the forgotten (p. xxiv), and “familial guilt” regarding sister Rose Marie (p. xix). The strength of Eunice is the window it provides into Kennedy sibling history and dynamics. Shriver both struggled with and supported the ambitions of her brothers, but she always placed their ambitions before hers. A desire to serve drove Shriver, and she spent much of her early adult life searching for the right cause(s) on which to target her energies and skills. Such causes always included her brothers' political careers, but also took into account juvenile justice reform, female prisoners, and the advocacy of those with Down syndrome
