A number of recent works have explored the afterlife of the intellectual culture of the Weimar Republic in the United States. As studies of thinkers such as Hans Morgenthau, Carl J. Friedrich, Hannah Arendt, and Leo Strauss have demonstrated, important synergies existed between the crisis and collapse of Weimar Republic and the apocalyptic, sometimes-antidemocratic inflections of American Cold War ideology. These synergies were interpersonal and conceptual: intellectuals exiled from German-speaking Europe came to occupy important positions in the American academy, from which they published their key ideas and trained students who would staff the postwar national security state. Daniel Bessner's Democracy in Exile makes a vital contribution to this growing area of scholarship. Most importantly, it presents a vivid portrait of Hans Speier, a figure known only in the world of defense policy analysis. Speier was in many ways an unlikely doyen of the postwar network of think tanks, research institutes, and university-based research centers that constituted the intellectual arsenal of American foreign policy at the height of the Cold War
