The stories of various maroon communities throughout the Atlantic world have drawn a great deal of interest among students and scholars since Orlando Patterson brought them to our attention in his 1970 analysis of Jamaican maroons (“Slavery and Slave Revolts: A Socio-Historical Analysis of the First Maroon War, Jamaica, 1655–1740,” Social and Economic Studies, no. 3, 1970). Yet, in the ensuing decades, relatively few book-length studies have been written on any of the numerous maroon communities in the Americas. I have often been asked by undergraduate and graduate students about resources for research projects on the maroons, and I point to the same limited number of books or articles on the topic, hoping for new work to be published. Ruma Chopra successfully fills this large gap in literature with her new tightly focused monograph, Almost Home. Chopra expands our understanding of the Trelawney maroons in Jamaica, characterizing them as creolized immigrants, further enhancing previous studies on this resilient community
