This insightful book rewrites the history of the 1960s from the bottom up, focusing on the true children of the sixties—preadolescents—and how this cohort reacted to the space race, the Cuban missile crisis, John F. Kennedy's assassination, and the Vietnam War. Impressive chapters explore the construction of racial identities, the perceptions and lived experience of children of the counterculture, and preadolescents' reactions to the women's liberation movement. The book also examines the impact of the Great Society programs on the lives of these young people and, like the work of Glen H. Elder Jr. and William M. Tuttle Jr., explores the consequences of preadolescent experiences on later attitudes and behavior. The author views children born between 1956 and 1970 as a transitional cohort. These were the first preadolescents to experience a sharp rise in the divorce rate and the number of working and single mothers. Less homogeneous than its predecessors as a result of the 1965 Immigration Act, this cohort was also more likely to attend day care programs
