The personal is political,” became one of the defining anthems of the women's liberation movement. Nothing could be more personal than an examination of one's body, especially of parts previously shrouded by sheets and societal convention. The radical nature of becoming familiar with reproductive, sexual, and psychological components of womanhood led many to transformative action as detailed in Hannah Dudley-Shotwell's examination of the feminist self-help movement from the 1970s through the 1990s. In the process of telling the history of women's consciously feminist challenges to a patriarchal medical establishment, Dudley-Shotwell tells the story of the feminist movement in a microcosm in six chapters and an epilogue. She succeeds in recovering an obscure but important part of 1970s second-wave feminist movement. Dudley-Shotwell locates the feminist self-help movement in the emerging self-examination and menstrual extraction practices that emerged on the West Coast in the late 1960s, pre–Roe v. Wade (1973).
