Since Donald J. Trump's victory in the 2016 presidential election, the term populist has again emerged in American politics. Media pundits and political scientists have attempted to link the recent grassroots movement within the Republican party to the People's party of the 1890s. The People's Revolt, however, dispels any notion that the two movements share common ground. Instead, Gregg Cantrell argues that the populism of the 1890s is more properly aligned to the modern liberalism of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Cantrell attempts to provide greater clarity to the elusive political term modern liberalism. According to his definitions, modern liberalism evolved as the country matured, emerging in the late nineteenth century as the nation witnessed the rise of industrial capitalism and the modern corporation.
