Unlikely Dissenters

Anne Stefani's work examines the contributions of white southern women to combatting Jim Crow from the early 1920s through the late 1960s. Stefani's narrative is framed by her assertion that her subjects came to the struggle through Christianity, a deep sense of the immorality of racism, and their personal histories and identities, crafted as they were—and predicated upon—their roles as respectable southern “ladies” in a white patriarchal segregationist society. Stefani maintains that southern white women of these two generations were both oppressors and victims in the white segregationist system: oppressors due to their race; victims because of their gender. These women's simultaneous navigation of these two categories liberated them from the stultifying pedestal of white southern womanhood. Furthermore, daring to reorient what the “southern way of life” meant at a time when white segregationists hearkened back to such a life in justifying segregation rendered these women apostates in the South
