Bradley W. Hart knows how to tell a good story. Hitler's American Friends is well paced, informative, and fun to read (if the word fun can be used when discussing how fascism threatened to come to power in the United States). If I were teaching an introductory course on American politics and society in the 1930s and 1940s, I would certainly assign this book, not only because it provides a good introduction to the history of the far Right but also because it lends itself to interesting discussions about narrative formation and interpretation. Using published primary and secondary sources as well as material culled from a diverse set of archives, Hart's story spans the period from Adolf Hitler's rise to power through World War II. Early chapters deal with the Great Depression–era rise of the German American Bund, the Silver Shirts, and the religious Right (principally Fr. Charles E. Coughlin
