When a historical subdiscipline experiences a transition, its practitioners often take stock of the field. This seems especially true of intellectual historians, who, by training, are hypersensitive to paradigm shifts. Thus, in 1977, at a time when intellectual historians felt threatened by the rise of social history, they gathered at the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Wingspread House in Racine, Wisconsin, to survey the field. Out of that meeting grew New Directions in American Intellectual History (1979), edited by John Highamand Paul K. Conkin; the book has been a lodestar in the field ever since. Now, at a time when intellectual history's future seems brighter, or at least less beleaguered, intellectual historians are once again assessing their field. The latest and most comprehensive effort, The Worlds of American Intellectual History, arrives courtesy of the editors Joel Isaac, James T. Kloppenberg, Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen, and the late Michael O'Brien. Given the more optimistic context, The Worlds of American Intellectual History is far more upbeat than New Directionsin American Intellectual History but is also far more exemplary than programmatic, as noted by Angus Burgin in the only explicitly retrospective contribution to the volume. The Worlds of American Intellectual History mostly endows us with models of intellectual history's current best practices
