Trans-Pacific Japanese American Studies grew out of scholarly conferences held in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Los Angeles on the state of the field. The editors assembled a stable of authors who explore topics that have received little attention to date, largely because the study of wartime incarceration has occupied center stage in the literature. Organized into eight groups, the volume's contributors illustrate the diversity of scholarship on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. Following brief introductory remarks, part 1 is an analysis of Japanese American studies in Japan by Yasuko Takezawa. The second and third parts are devoted to discussions of racialization and communities, respectively, highlighting the complex and fluid nature of identity resulting from border crossings and migrations. The essays in part 4, “Intersections,” explore the relationships among gender, generation, nationality, and race. Valerie J. Matsumoto, specifically, discusses the shifting gendered racializations of Sansei (third-generation) women, who looked to activists from other groups as their role models
