This collection of nine nicely wrought essays seeks to correct what the editors claim is neglect of an important epoch in southern history, the region's experiences during World War I and its immediate aftermath. The contributors examine a variety of subjects, ranging from the war's impact on cotton production and the textile industry, through mobilization and food control and conscription, to the development of a major port. Nor do they confine themselves to the experiences of white male southerners but examine college women's roles in the war, black people in one state, and the activities of the newly formed National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Taken together, these essays touch on many interesting and sometimes-overlooked aspects of Dixie during these years. It would be invidious to compare the essays in quality, but I did find the ones on cotton and textiles and African Americans particularly noteworthy. The strength
