This new Routledge Companion signals the continuing development of the new field loosely known as film and philosophy. The book is another contribution to a new subdiscipline within philosophy (as philosophers may think of it) and an interesting, if somewhat suspect, meeting point of film and philosophy (as some film studies scholars may see it). The stakes, at this stage, are high. Everything about the new field is up for grabs, which is what makes it so interesting. Questions of ontology, epistemology, pedagogy, and aesthetics come from the philosophy side of the conjunction, while questions of cinematic tradition, theory and technique, and questions about interpretation and reception, come from film studies. The result of this meeting point of film and philosophy is a fresh and exciting new field. The burgeoning literature on film and philosophy over the past fifteen years, and the great interest students have in the field, both show that the conjunction is fruitful. It has yielded fascinating philosophical readings of film as well as film-inspired analyses of philosophical ideas. Additionally, because it is a nascent field, the literature has also been debating what the field is and how the conjunction ‘film and philosophy’ should be understood
