This article analyses the basic patterns by which neologisms have been made in Serbian over the last few decades. The focus of attention is primarily on borrowings (Graecisms, Latinisms, Anglicisms, Anglo-Graecisms, AngloLatinisms, common Europeanisms, and calques formed in ``translation,'' along with Gallicisms, Italianisms, Germanisms, Russianisms, etc.). The main derivational patterns native to Serbian (pre®xation, su xation, compounding, etc.) are explained as well. At the end, in special sections, neologisms are categorized and commented upon according to culturally de®ned basic areas of life and knowledge: in politics (bureaucracy, administration, etc.), in technical innovations and technologies of various kinds, in the media, in entertainment, in fashion, and ®nally in the domain of sports. In doing so, observations are made of the main tendencies in the ®eld of neologisms Ð both linguistic and non-linguistic ones. For example, the distaste of standard Serbian for puristic tendencies, the remarkable openness of the Serbian lexicon to internationalisms, the predominance of Anglicisms of the new age, the relative ``lack of inventiveness'' of Serbian when it needs to name new technical and technological imports, and the lack of institutionally organized oversight for the language in terms of standardizing its terminology
