This article deals with the rapid development in spoken Danish during the 1900s. Standard Danish, the so-called rigsmal changes rapidly and spreads nationwide under the influence of Copenhagen speech. Selected empirical data demonstrate how this process takes place in an interplay between social, age-related, and regional forces. The article also characterizes the regional varieties which are the result of the rigsmal's influencing the classical dialects
