Until recently the present-day Bulgarian language situation was regarded as problem-free. Sociolinguistics has shown, however, that the present-day situation is quite complicated as a result of the mass migration from villages and small towns to bigger cities, and to Sofia in particular. At the same time, tensions are generated by ethnic languages that currently have the status of dialects used in informal communication. This article examines the factors complicating the Balkan language situation in both the recent and the more distant past. The origin of Contemporary Standard Bulgarian in the nineteenth century is traced on a diagnostic plane, with an emphasis on the role of towns in central and northeastern Bulgaria. The consolidation function of Sofia as the capital of Bulgaria after the 1878 liberation from Turkish domination is also discussed. The article shows the integration of dialects in Standard Bulgarian via the creation of mesolects as a result of so-called dialect convergence.' Processes in compact Turkish and Gypsy communities aiming to upset the status quo of bilingualism are also analyzed
