It is a great honor to take over as Chief Editors of the Socio-Economic Review. We both have been long-term active contributors to SASE and great fans of the journal. In our first editorial, we will introduce ourselves and share our vision for the future of the journal and the new initiatives we would like to pursue. What makes this job both easy and impossibly hard is that we are replacing Gregory Jackson, who led the journal as Chief Editor since 2013. Jackson is leaving the journal in excellent shape: under his leadership, SER became one of the leading journals in multiple disciplines. Launched in 2003, SER got its impact factor only in 2011, and today, it is among the very top journals in sociology, political science and ranked high in economics. This is what makes our job easy. ‘Just do no harm’, a little voice tells us. Filling Jackson’s shoes will be incredibly difficult. In the last few months of ongoing conversations to prepare the January 2022 handover, in the process of which we held numerous zoom meetings and even traveled to Berlin, we learned what an impossible job Jackson has done over the last 9 years as the number of submissions that crossed his chief editor’s desk tripled. We were particularly impressed with the careful close reading and thoughtful guidance that manuscripts got from Jackson at various stages in the submission, review and revision process. Now that the job of chief editor is shared between the two of us, it will both make day-to-day work more manageable and provide another pair of eyes and a sounding board for the decision-making. We are full of ideas on how to capitalize on the journal’s success and introduce measures that we hope will make the journal even more attractive to readers and to authors from across the globe, particularly to young scholars.
