Este artigo investiga a crítica merleau-pontiana ao idealismo moderno a partir do modelo reflexivo adotado por este último. Procura mostrar a necessidade em que o filósofo se vê de superar a separação entre o domínio da "sensibilidade" e do "entendimento", como condição para redefinir o problema da racionalidade. Procura mostrar ainda que a "reflexão radical" proposta por Merleau-Ponty, em oposição à reflexão idealista, leva-o a retomar as tarefas que outrora cabiam à metafísica clássica
